Dirt Monkey

June 16 @ Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom

My love/addiction with music began farther back than I can remember, but it really got going when I started listening to hip hop, and trying to make some hip hop-ish kind of beats on my own. They sounded mad cheezy, but I was loving it… My musical background before that only consisted of banging on djembes, playing a few Nirvana songs on the guitar, and trying to makes sounds come out of a saxophone, so I thought it was pretty rad that I could compose my own music with nothing but a computer! So after about 6 or 7 years of making beats for myself (didn’t want other people to be exposed to the cheeziness) I started mixing some hip hop instrumentals on my friend’s turntables, and got into dj’ing. After doing a lot of gigs playing mostly breaks, I started throwing some of my stuff in the mix. Seeing people jump around to my original stuff was an AMAZING feeling, so I started trying to produce stuff that made people move. Then I heard some dubstep for the first time, and it changed everything. It’s like a drug or something!! The tempo and the sounds that come from a good dubstep song are the things that make me want to live now. So I’ve been producing and my own kind of Monkeystep for a little while now, and spreading it to the masses via giant speakers is all I ever want to do. . . .
