Koan Sound
Koan Sound
Convention is shape-shifted into new life by the koan– an impenetrable concept, crafted for use in Buddhist meditation. The same methodology is precisely what can always be expected of music duo KOAN Sound ...Broadcast on several releases by Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint, alongside the UK’s Inspected Records, the group’s output showcases the vast range of musical territories they inhabit. Be it the formative techy weight renovating established dance music structures on their first releases from hometown labels in Bristol, the mutated brutality of their mid-tempo constructions –or even the cinematic journeys through orchestral expanses, revealed on their 2013 Sanctuary EP – members Jim Bastow and Will Weeks distinguish themselves across genres with inspired creativity, meticulous production finesse, and emphatic mastership of groove. Their infamous funk-infused formulations (perhaps most prevalent on their Funk Blaster EP) thrill audiences and DJs the world over, frequently synthesizing live instrumentation: a residual quality oftheir earliest days as a live band, with their vital and emblematic production. These renowned characteristics have not only informed a number of acclaimed remix conquests for artists such as Ed Sheeran and Kasabian, but also serve to make us evermore mindful of this duo’s compelling evolution.
Hailing from Bristol, UK, Asa’s unique combination of narrative and evocative song-writing and dancefloor-ready bass music has seen him establish himself as one of the most inspired British artists of his generation. With over a decade of experience of gigging and releasing music since his teenage years, his worldwide fan base has expanded over the years: to the point that his music uploads now accrue millions of plays via YouTube and other popular streaming platforms, while offline his sell-out shows unite dense audiences for hours at a time, and his tracks and remixes are broadcast across the airwaves on BBC and other mainstream radio channels (by Mista Jam, Mary Anne Hobbs, Zane Lowe et al.). A prime and current example of the popular demand for Asa’s music and its outreach across the airwaves would be his extended guest mix for BBC Radio 1 Bass music aficionado, Logan Sama for his eponymous show … Asa’s name whets the appetites of Bass music and Grime fans everywhere, being synonymous with the highest production values, progressive musical innovation, and – moreover – the contemporary revival of the Grime genre itself. In addition to the public endorsements, airplay, promotion, and recognition from DJs and artists such as Ellie Goulding, Mista Jam, Annie Mac, Skrillex, Bonobo, Burial, Wiley, and Mary Anne Hobbs to name just a few, Asa has released music across prestigious labels such as Joker’s ‘Kapsize’ imprint, ‘Fent Plates’, Skrillex’s ‘OWSLA’ label, and ‘Inspected Records’ (who have released three of Asa’s EPs since 2012). The latter two labels (Skrillex’s OWSLA’ and ‘Inspected’) snapped up his Sanctuary EP with KOAN Sound for release in their respective territories – this long project was a tour de force and a nonpareil which was met with widespread acclaim for its emotive compositions and impressive sound design; it topped the iTunes download chart on release and instantly secured the #1 spot in the Beatport chart.

American music sensations The Glitch Mob praised the EP for being ‘absolutely incredible’, while Skrillex reinforced the extended project’s originality, and the successful realisation of its ambitious intentions, stating ‘Asa and KOAN Sound’s Sanctuary EP is so beautiful and is also taking risks in an amazing way.’Asa regularly collaborates with artists whose composition style or musical background differs, and at times even contrasts, with his own; amongst others, Asa has previously worked professionally with: Ed Sheeran, Kahn, Stumbleine, Trim, Foreign Beggars, Sorrow, and, of course, KOAN Sound.

His music is consistently praised for its originality, often harmonising unlikely elements from orchestral soundscapes to forward-thinking Grime music; this has allowed him to reach new audiences and perform at a great range of events and festivals the world over, showcasing all the distinguished facets of his sound. Dancing Astronaut magazine describe his music as ‘breathtaking […] a breath of fresh air that just might inspire a new wave of intrigue into the world of broken beat music’. Predictable only in the consistent quality of hisoutput, Asa’s innovative compositions and fascinating artistic trajectory see him continue to conquer new musical territories, always with astonishing results. He is currently working on the completion of his debut album.
