Liver Down the River
Liver Down the River
Liver Down The River is a six-piece jam style bluegrass group from the beautiful mountains of Durango, CO. The band incorporates elements of funk, rock, celtic, and Irish music into their sound. Their story began in the fall of 2012, when mandolin/harmonica player Patrick Storen met vocalist/guitar player Matt Granzow. The pair had an impromptu jam session in the Bader Snyder Dorm room of Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. Together they began experimenting with bluegrass music, and incorporated their eclectic styles on traditional Grateful Dead tunes. That day spawned a lifelong friendship between the pair, and before long they were picking together every afternoon.

Soon after, Emily Aguirre-Winter got word of these picking sessions and joined them with her fiddle and lead vocals. Aguirre-Winter brings her melodic vocal beauty to Liver Down The River’s music, and her classically trained musical background initiates refreshing and angelic textures to each creative composition. Aguirre-Winter adds a melodic flavor to the group with her songwriting craftsmanship, and ability to pinpoint harmonies and echoing call and response heard on songs like ‘Shot O’ Booze’ and ‘Murder Ballad’.

Over the next few months the trio enlisted the talent of drummer John Carter Colia, and bassist/vocalist Derek Abt. These additions allowed for more ambitious musical excursions, and a breakaway from traditional bluegrass instrumentation. Colia, the man that keeps the train from rolling off the tracks each night, is the driving force of the band. His approach to percussion allows for the band to dive into many different styles, wile maintaining a rhythmic flow. This driving force is complimented by Abt’s funky bass rhythms paving the pathway for the band to bend the rules of traditional bluegrass, and pioneer a sound of their own, which they call NewGrass. In 2014 the multi instrument virtuoso Tyler Rice was added to band on lead vocals, banjo, and keyboards. Having moved to Durango from Cumming, GA Rice quickly took on a key role as a remarkable songwriter for the band with enticing stories of the road and traveling experiences. With this addition, Liver Down The River was complete.

Experimenting with extended improvisational jamming and exploring a diverse range of musical genres, Liver Down The River brings new life to classic fiddle tunes and traditional bluegrass standards. Striving to write music that conveys the atmosphere and feeling of the Colorado way of life, Granzow’s lyrics connect with real life emotions and are easily relatable to anyone who listens. Granzow states, “Whether it be our high energy bluegrass tunes, extended jamming, or funk tunes—we are creating music that will last, and connect with the emotions of our audiences.” Fueled by the energy of their whiskey drinking and dancing audiences Liver Down The River creates a show full of magic and spontaneous surprises. Their high-energy performances and close interaction with their fans lead to the attraction of their dedicated fan base, known as the Liverfolk.

Liver Down The River will be releasing Liver Down The River EP on June 30th 2015, and will be celebrating the EP release with performances throughout the summer of 2015. Liver Down The River EP will be available for digital download on all major listening platforms, and will be available for purchase at all of their upcoming shows. Shovelin Stone
Shovelin Stone
With roots embedded in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and a sound unhinged in the capital of Texas, Shovelin Stone is a music almost as unique as the friendship it stems from. A shared passion for old-timey bluegrass is what brought Makenzie and Zak together, but it's the unknowing joy for the moment and the obsession with the complications that life brings that continues to push the duo forward. The road is winding but one thing is for sure that with these two at the wheel it's going to be a wild ride.
