Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud, but antiquated, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early predecessors of jazz as we know it, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot, burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late '70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club decided to assemble this group as a house band, and over the course of these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue's name:The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Thirty-five years later, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine, whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. They have revitalized the brass band in New Orleans and around the world, progressing from local parties, clubs, baseball games and festivals in their early years to touring nearly constantly in the U.S. and in over 30 other countries on five continents. The Dirty Dozen have been featured guests on albums by artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, Modest Mouse, Dave Matthews Band and the Black Crowes.

Slap!
That’s right. Filthy Children just slapped you right in the face. Take a moment. Just feel that for a second. You haven’t even heard their music yet – much less do you even know them – but they slapped you right up in your face without shame. Goddamn. That wasn’t personal. That’s just how it is baby. They’re just trying to help prepare you for when you actually get up and come with your friends on down to the show. I know that you may be feelin a little guilty because you actually enjoyed that. Don’t. It’s all part of their thing. Filthy will give you that funk soul slap that stings so good. Three buttery horns, a smokin female vocalist, drums, bass, guitar, and a smattering of analog synth burbles to fill the spaces. You don’t believe it? Slap!!! There it is again. What’d I just tell you? Dig it. You can’t take you’re attention away now. You want to know more don’t you? Mmmm Hmmm….

Based out of Denver, Colorado, Filthy Children first hit the stage together in Nov, 2003. Since then, they have been laying it down all over the land, landing headlining gigs at nearly all of Colorado’s most respected venues and festivals including: Boulder’s The Fox, Aspen’s Belly Up, The Bluebird and Gothic Theaters, Ft. Collins’ The Aggie Theater, Hodi’s Half-Note and Mishawaka Ampitheater, as well as a headlining performance at Summerfest in Milwaukee two years in a row. Filthy band members have shared the stage with such funky musical luminaries as Galactic, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Rebirth Brass Band, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, J.J. Grey and Mofro, and Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band to name just a few.
